Imagination Stage

Imagination Stage in Bethesda, Maryland is a children’s theater company offering year-round productions of modern and classic plays. The organization also offers classes in drama, acting, dance musical theatre, and filmmaking for children of all ages. Summer theatre camps give campers the opportunity to take part in a full production of a musical or play.

Imagination Stage is the largest and most respected multi-disciplinary theatre arts organization for young people in the Mid-Atlantic region. We offer a year-round season of professional shows (adult actors performing for families and classes), after-school programs and summer camps for ages 1-18, and arts-integration professional development training for teachers, students, schools, and families. All of our programs are informed by our core belief in making the arts inclusive and accessible to all children, regardless of their physical, cognitive, or financial status.

Rumpelstiltskin F

“This is a story that’s old as old, of how a girl turned straw into gold.” When a poor miller brags that his daughter has a talent for spinning straw into gold, a greedy and zany king commands her to make gold for his coffers. Unable to perform this feat, the miller’s daughter enlists the help of a rotten riddling fairy named Rumpelstiltskin…but his price for helping is high. Will she be able to solve Rumpelstiltskin’s mystery in time to save her family? Best for Ages 5-10.



Cinderella: the Remix

Cinderella lives in the basement of her Step Mama’s house, mixing beats and dreaming of being a DJ. But in Hip-Hop Hollywood, girls are not allowed to DJ and “frontin’” is a crime. When the super-famous J-Prince announces auditions for his “Jam,” Cinderella disguises herself as a boy to get the gig. With some help from her Fairy Godmother Hope-rah, Cinderella DJs the Jam (at least until midnight)! Will she ever be allowed to spin as her true self? Or will Cinderella be convicted of frontin’ and sentenced to solitary confinement with only the music of Kenny G for company? Best for Ages 5-10.

Little orphan Sophie can’t sleep. When she peeks out the window, she is surprised to see a giant. He’s surprised to see her too and whisks Sophie away to his home in Giant Country. But this is no ordinary giant; Sophie’s giant is the world’s ONLY friendly giant. He operates in the strictest of secrecy to bring good dreams to the human world. Other giants steal and have a nasty habit of eating children! To save the children of England, Sophie and the Big Friendly Giant (BFG) embark on a magical journey to Buckingham Palace. Best for Ages 4-10.

Workshops and Shows for Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts

In these events scouts watch a include a theatre performance in our Lerner Family Theatre and then participate in a corresponding followed by a 90-minute workshop. Each participating scout walks out with an earned patch (Girl Scouts) or belt loop and academic pin (Cub Scouts).


Dramatically increase your fundraising by purchasing a block of tickets (or the whole theatre!) for a weekend day or evening show as a fundraiser for your organization. We provide a volume discount (cost as low as $9 per ticket) and you sell the tickets at a premium to your event attendees. It is both wonderful family fun and highly successful.

Family Programming

Early Childhood


My First Imagination Stage is our Early Childhood program that focuses on children aged 1-5, providing fun and developmentally exciting experiences through classes and live performances. Play is serious fun for the very young.


You And Me (Ages 12-36 months) Be the flower while your child becomes the butterfly! These caregiver and child classes use props and materials to stimulate the senses and promote your child’s development of social and motor skills.Register Online

My Friends And Me (Ages 3–5) Older children are ready to play on their own! Students play together, develop relationships, and enter the world of make believe. Through the use of music, movement and dramatic play, these classes ignite your child’s imagination while flexing his or her problem-solving, language, and physical skills.

Sunday Fun-Day

We invite you and your child to bring your favorite stories to life through dramatic play activities, movement, music, and visual art. Each session you leave with a completed craft, as well as a Parent Pack to extend the experience at home. These popular workshops are themed around beloved children’s books. Best for ages 1-3.*

You and your child are invited to a fun, interactive musical experience! An Early Childhood Teaching Artist (playing a ukulele!) explores a popular children’s book with your family through song and musical instruments, and you will receive a list of all the songs to practice at home. Best for ages 1 month-3 years.*

telltale heartsFrom Here to There October 25–November 24, 2013. Two friends build bridges from cardboard boxes and use rhythm and vocal play to create a catchy tune. It’s like jumping inside the world of a child’s imagination! Performances are followed by a “free play” session, allowing the audience to explore some of the props! Ages 2-5.

aquariumAquarium December 17, 2013–January 26, 2014. With gentle music, beautiful puppets, and props, Jack and Calypso lead children and caregivers to a magical, interactive world where giant jellyfish fly through the air, sheep graze in the grass, and lemons create the sun in a “let’s pretend” sky. Ages 1-5.

inside out 300Inside Out March 1–April 6, 2014. It’s bedtime! But, instead of getting ready for bed, two children use their imaginations to turn their room into a wonderland of mess! While playing dress-up, a glove becomes a dancing fish, a shirt becomes a fantastical creature, and a sock dance rocks the closet! In this interactive show, discover the joy of turning things inside out. Performances include a “free play” session, allowing the audience to explore some items used in the show. Ages 1-5.

mouse_onthe_moveMouse on the Move June 28-August 10, 2014 Nellie and Amelia are two adventurous mice ready to explore the world beyond their little mouse-hole. They decide to go to the moon, since it is cat-free and made entirely of delicious, mouth-watering cheese (so they have heard). In this interactive play, there are many opportunities for audience participation. Join us as we all try to reach beyond the stars.  Ages 1-5

During the academic year, students in our Conservatories and Ensembles perform in the intimate 150-seat Christopher and Dana Reeve Studio Theatre at Imagination Stage.     i came here for the camp, and it was really great!! at first i was a lil shy becuz i never performed in front of a live audience but the people here do an amazing job building up your confidence, and also telling you how to not be afraid of the audience. i love this place, cant wait to go again this summer 🙂
