Wickham Fruit Farm.jpg
28700 Route 25, Cutchogue, NY, United States

Wickham’s Fruit Farm is located on 28700 Route 25 in Cutchogue, Long Island, about 90 miles east of New York City. Wickham’s fruit is grown on some of the oldest continually cultivated land in the country, much of the farm dating from 1661. Wickham’s Fruit Farm is an historic, bicentennial farm, beautiful to behold against the sparkling waters of Peconic Bay.

It is one of the largest farms on the North Fork, approximately 300 acres, of which 200 acres are in fruit, all of which is retailed at the farm. The emphasis is on fruit of the highest quality, and all fruit sold is guaranteed.

A very large proportion of Wickham farm land has been placed in Suffolk County’s Farmland Preservation program, which means that for generations to come, this land is “forever agriculture.”
Wickham’s Fruit Farm is a family enterprise which has taken pride in producing and marketing the choicest of fruit. The retail market is open usually from May through December from Monday through Saturday.

Wickham’s is closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas.
Schools and private groups who book a tour in advance can schedule a tour of the farm to pick fruit in season, enjoy the scenic beauty of a farm on the water, observe a live working beehive, and when possible, observe our old historic cider press.

Jencks Education Center at Slater Mill

Established in memory of Davis Jencks, The Jencks Education Center is Slater Mill’s major initiative to link knowledge of the past with the rich opportunities of modern Pawtucket. The Center hosts a variety of arts and handcraft workshops, educational programs, after school learning opportunities, and business and group events. In conjunction with the Center , the Slater Mill Gallery across Roosevelt Avenue in the Visitor Center exhibits the work of local and national artists and craftspeople. The adjoining gift shop serves as an outlet to purchase their work.

The Jencks Education Center is located on the physically accessible second floor of Slater Mill. The Board of Trustees has made a deliberate choice to honor the historic character of the interior of Slater Mill. With the exception of a bit of paint and floor repair, the Center maintains the building’s historic authenticity. Our architect, Luke Mandle, designed fixtures and furnishings that reflect an industrial feel as opposed to a colonial reproduction style that would confuse visitors and chip away at the true integrity of the mill space.

Our Jencks Education Center

The Innovation Room is a gorgeous space with banks of windows overlooking the Blackstone River on three sides. This room serves up to 60 people and has been outfitted with conference/work tables using recycled textile machinery as bases. It is fully wired for technology. The room serves rental needs for retreats, corporate meetings, community programs, the Mill’s own interpretation programs with school children and as a space for workshops with regional and national craftspeople.

The Confluence Room is an extremely inviting library with large, comfortable seating and warm lighting. It also serves as a breakout space for meetings held in the Innovation Room.

Conference Room
Conference Room

The Artifact Access Space use an innovative collection storage method (currently being put into use at the RISD Museum and across the country) called “visible storage” to bring our vast collection to the public. We rotate exhibitions of tools, historical documents, textiles, printing items, early hand machines, and other items so that students, historians, artists and the public can study, read, draw and explore the fantastic collection that was once hidden away in a physically inaccessible third floor archive.

In addition to the in-school curriculum opportunities that Slater Mill currently offers, the Jencks Education Center addresses the need for after school programming, offering various lessons for middle and high school students. We work with urban schools in the surrounding metro areas to provide quality hands-on after school opportunities for a new generation of youth. Our programs include woodworking and textile projects that demonstrate the applied use of science, math, art and communication in a group setting.

Mineralogy & Mining Education

The Sterling Hill Mining Museum is dedicated to educating teachers and their students about natural resource issues, with particular reference to the State of New Jersey.

Our education programs explore such topics as the geology and mineralogy of New Jersey, our nonrenewable resources (metals, nonmetals, and fuels), how those resources have been extracted and used over time, and, in a global sense, how our present lives are shaped by the materials available to us. We work within the broad fields of the STEM core subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), which we often explore not only in their current but also historical contexts.

All of our educational offerings are aligned with New Jersey core curriculum standards and are designed to be implemented by teachers within the context of their existing school curriculum.

The library, located in the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Research Building, is open to all interested readers without appointment or charge, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; it is closed on legal holidays. Staff welcomes inquiries and will respond in as timely a manner as possible.

The holdings of the library are cataloged in WinterCat, an online catalog available at Winterthur as well as through Winterthur’s web site. Bibliographic records of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and photographs are added daily to WinterCat, offering researchers an opportunity to inquire about the full range of the library’s holdings. The library’s bibliographic records are contributed to WorldCat, a comprehensive online resource maintained by OCLC.

Garden

Winterthur’s 1,000 acres encompass rolling hills, streams, meadows, and forests. Founder Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969) developed an appreciation of nature as a boy that served as the basis for his life’s work in the garden. He selected the choicest plants from around the world to enhance the natural setting, arranging them in lyrical color combinations and carefully orchestrating a succession of bloom from late January to November. Du Pont translated his love of the land into a unified work of art that embodies a romantic vision of nature’s beauty.

Our party room comfortably holds a maximum of 40 guests (children and adults). If the number of guests exceeds the number of guests reserved, you may be billed for the extra guests. Birthday parties can be booked for less than 16 guests, but remember the minimum charge is 16 children plus accompanying adults.

Of course! You may bring store bought food. Food prepared from home is not allowed. Remember to bring perishables in coolers because we have no cooking or refrigeration facilities. Please, no red dye juices. Sorry, no credit is given for bringing your own food.

Can I bring my own decorations?

Yes! However, please do not bring any decorations that need to be hung or attached to the walls or the ceiling. Table decorations are most appropriate. For the safety of the animals: ballons, confetti, pinatas or other similar items are not permitted.

Does the Museum supply paper goods and utensils?

Plastic and paper goods (plates, cups, napkins, forks, table covers, etc.) will be provided, but you may bring your own, if you wish. However, no credit is given for bringing your own supplies.

Can I have a guided tour?

The Museum does not currently offer guided tours. Visitors can enjoy more than 200 hands-on, interactive exhibits at their own pace. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone while exploring the Museum.

    Can I purchase gift bags?

    Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

You may also make reservations in person at the concierge desk:

    Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

    • A non-refundable $125 deposit is required at the time of the reservation in order to reserve the date.
    • The balance and final guest count are due 10 days before your scheduled party.
    • Reservations with outstanding balances risk cancellation and no refunds will be given.
    • A party package will be mailed to you after your deposit is processed. The party package will include 1 parking pass, invitations and reservation paperwork.

What do I do when I arrive?

Place your parking pass on your dashboard and park in our bus loop on S.W. 5th Avenue (Commodore Brook Avenue). Proceed to the Concierge Desk, and inform us of your arrival at least 30 minutes before your scheduled party time to meet your Museum host. If you arrive early to enjoy the Museum or an IMAX film before your party, the Concierge will contact your Museum birthday host to store your food and gifts.

Late party arrivals risk a compromised time schedule since other parties or events may follow your allotted time in the party room. No refunds are available for late arrivals.
Your Museum host will assist you by transporting your food and gifts to the party room as well as helping you get the room ready for your guests.

    Where do my guests park?

Inform your guests that they can park on the street or in the Arts and Entertainment parking garage located across from the Museum on S.W. 5th Avenue (Commodore Brook Avenue). Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk Connecticut.jpg
10 North Water Street, Norwalk, CT, United States

Opened in July 1988, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to have a good time while learning about the vital natural resource just off our shore: Long Island Sound. Set in a refurbished 1860s factory at the mouth of the Norwalk River, the Aquarium building and its location reflect the region’s industrial past and human uses of Long Island Sound for recreation and commerce.

Visitors explore at their own pace, observing 34 exhibits featuring more than 1,200 marine animals of 259 species. The Long Island Sound journey begins along a freshwater river and the shallow waters of the salt marsh, then moves into deeper and deeper habitats out to the open ocean. These close encounters with animals, enhanced by friendly volunteer interpreters and informative display panels, educate visitors about the aquatic life of Long Island Sound and its watershed.

The sharks, seals, river otters, sea turtles and other animals, carefully tended in re-created natural settings, serve as ambassadors both for their species and the Sound’s natural environment. These intimate encounters are the heart of the learning experience and provide visitors – children especially – with a basis for understanding their role in the web of life.

Asides from the normal visit at the Aquarium and checking out the IMAX theater at Norwalk, the Maritime Aquarium offers many great programs suitable for children and families. Take a look below at all the fun and interesting things that the aquarium has to offer.

Study Cruises onto Long Island Sound

Cruise out with us aboard the research vessel Oceanic for thrilling explorations of the Sound’s marine life: with a variety of animals brought up right onto the boat (April-October) or to look for some of the seals & waterfowl that winter in the Sound (December-April).  Details …

Creature Encounter (11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays & Sundays)

Meet one of our beautiful Diamondback Terrapins and learn what you can do to help protect Long Island Sound. Their lovely blue skin offers a hue rarely found in the animal world.

FREE with Aquarium admission.

Animal Embassy Programs (11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on selected days)

Stamford-based Animal Embassy will present some of their live “animal ambassadors” in guided hands-on introductions. Children (and adults!) will be able to touch and even hold select animals while learning about their appearances, behaviors, adaptations and habitats, as well as the conservation issues they face. FREE with Aquarium admission. • Sometime in October

<

p style=”text-align: center;”>Shark Dives (At 1:45 p.m. on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays
)

Would you jump into a tank of water filled with 6- and 7-foot sharks? Actually, it can be done – bloodlessly – because sharks aren’t really the aggressive man-eaters of popular myth. Come see for yourself when The Maritime Aquarium’s dive team spends some quality time among the sand tiger sharks, lemon shark and other creatures of the 110,000-gallon “Ocean Beyond the Sound” exhibit. Thanks to a cool communication link, you can even talk with the divers while they’re in the exhibit with the sharks! They’ll tell you that sharks should be respected … but not feared. (You also can talk to the divers before they go in the water between 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on “dive days.”) FREE with Aquarium admission.

“Behind-the-Scenes Tours” (On the third Saturday of every month, at 8:15 a.m.)

Operating the aquarium is an complicated production that must satisfy more than 1,000 animals with varying requirements for food, water temperatures and salinities, and more. See how it’s all done when you visit our jellyfish “nursery” and the “fish kitchen,” where meals for our residents are prepared. We’ll go above the “Ocean Beyond the Sound” exhibit, where you can look down on the sharks in their 110,000-gallon tank … and even toss in some fish for them to eat! And feel the tickle as you hand-feed the cow-nosed rays!

Participants must be 10 years and older. Anyone under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. “Behind-the-Scenes Tours” cost $32.50 for non-members ($22.50 for Aquarium members) and include Aquarium admission at 10 a.m. There is a maximum of 25 people per tour. Advance reservations strongly recommended. Walk-up sales are accepted.

For reservations, Purchase tickets online (click on the date you wish to come) or call The Maritime Aquarium at (203) 852-0700, ext. 2206. Space is limited.

Aquarium Cruises

The Maritime Aquarium offers two study cruise programs onto Long Island Sound. These are available to the public and also to schools/summer camps as charters.

Marine Life Study Cruise:

Offered from May 5 through October

Public schedule: 1 p.m. Saturdays May 5-June 30 and then at 1 p.m. daily in July & August. Also on Saturdays in September & October.

Study marine biodiversity from the water’s surface down to the bottom for a first-hand understanding of Long Island Sound’s interdependent marine life. Students utilize such sampling techniques as a plankton tow, biodredge, mud grab and otter trawl that may bring up fish, crabs, lobsters, sea stars and more. A video microscope and touch tank onboard enhance observations. Passengers must be over 42″ tall. Capacity: 29. Cost: $20.50 per person. ($18.50 for Aquarium members)

Dinosaur State Park.jpg
400 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT, United States

Welcome to Dinosaur State Park

The Connecticut Valley has a long history of fossil track discoveries. Outstanding specimens uncovered in 19th century brownstone quarries found their way into museums throughout the world. A new chapter in the history of such discoveries was written in 1966 when hundreds of tracks were exposed in Rocky Hill. This remarkable site became Dinosaur State Park.

Outdoor activities include walking trails that lead past 25 life-size concrete and steel dinosaurs. See the creatures that roamed the state up to 230 years ago on the Connecticut Trail; try out Monty’s Splashpad, a state of the art interactive water play. Inside, kids can continue their discoveries in the Bone Zone, where they can dig for faux fossils, dig for crystals, pan for gold and do not leave without shopping in the 10,000 square foot retail area.

Cold Spring Fish Harbor Hatchery and Aquarium.jpg
1660 New York 25A, Cold Spring Harbor, Oyster Bay, NY, United States

Welcome to the Fish Hatchery & Aquarium

After 99 years as a New York State trout hatchery, we opened as a non-profit educational center dedicated to educating our visitors about the freshwater ecosystems of New York. We are proud to have the largest living collection of New York State freshwater reptiles, fishes and amphibians. Visitors can tour our two aquarium buildings and eight outdoor ponds, feed the hungry trout, and try our “Catch & Keep” fishing.

Each year schools, scouts and other groups visit the Hatchery to learn about the freshwater ecosystems of New York State. Elementary level programs, such as Fins and Jaws, Habitats and Life Cycles, and secondary level programs, such as Pond Life and Freshwater Ecology, complement New York State learning standards and enrich the learning experiences of the students. The Hatchery’s seasonal Egg Stripping program allows students to witness the centuries-old technique of fish breeding: egg taking and fertilization.

With the continuing support from Hatchery members, government agencies, private organizations and foundations, the Hatchery has been able to expand its programming with outreach options. Working in conjunction with Trout in the Classroom, the Hatchery is able to bring Egg Stripping programs into schools.

The ability of the Hatchery to serve the community as a gathering place for special family and educational events, attests to its dedicated mission to increase awareness and appreciation for the freshwater ecosystems of New York State.

Exhibits

1. Walter L. Ross II Aquarium Building
This building houses over 30 different species of freshwater fish native to New York State. The fish range from the primitive bowfin to the native Long Island brook trout. In the Turtle Alcove you will find our hatchling turtles. Can you match the young turtles with the adults outside? This building was named after Walter L. Ross II who was an avid trout fisherman and enthusiastic board member.2. Robert Koenig Memorial Pond
Dedicated in September 2001 and generously donated by his family, the Robert Koenig Memorial Pond houses brown trout and water lilies.3. Hatch House & Rearing Pools
Trout eggs are protected from hungry predators and sunlight in the Hatch House. The eggs, taken in early November, hatch in late December. The fish remain here for about four months or until they are moved into the rearing pools. The rearing pools are intermediate pools between the troughs in the Hatch House and the large outdoor Trout Ponds. They provide the needed space for young trout to grow. The fish in these pools will move to the larger ponds within the year.

4. Trout Ponds
Refer to the signs on each pond for the species and their month of hatching. The water that feeds these ponds is 52 degrees year round. You’ll notice the nets over the ponds – these help keep hungry predators such as herons and ospreys from eating the trout.

5. Warm Water Pond
The water in this pond comes from St. John’s Pond, located directly south of the Hatchery. This pond may freeze in winter, but can reach temperatures as warm as 80 degrees in the summer. Unlike trout, the fish in this pond can tolerate higher water temperatures. The inhabitants are varied, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, bowfin, longnose gar, channel catfish, common carp, grass carp, bluegills, pumpkinseeds, white and yellow perch, American eels, walleye, white bass, lake sturgeon, redhorse suckers, and northern pike.

6. Turtle Pond
This pond has the same water source as the Warm Water Pond. On sunny days many of the turtles will bask on the cedar logs. The various species include Blandings, painted, wood, eastern spiny softshell, snapping, redbelly, and common map turtles.

7. Round Ponds
The round ponds hold brook or rainbow trout ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 years old. The round ponds are self cleaning; the water flows in at the side and drains through the middle.

8. Tidal Raceway
Freshwater flows from our outdoor ponds and artesian wells into the Tidal Raceway, which then empties into Long Island Sound. Our “Catch & Keep” trout fishing takes place in the Tidal Raceway every Friday through Tuesday.

9. Tidal Creek Observation Platform
From this deck you can observe the tidal creek and the St. John’s Pond spillway and dam, where there was once an ice house. There are still many birds and animals which visit, make homes, and sometimes reproduce in the tidal estuary. Anadromous fish, such as alewives and white perch, move into this creek seasonally.

10. Fairchild Exhibit Building
In this building, there are aquariums displaying some of New York’s smaller, native freshwater fishes, reptiles and amphibians. The “New York Amphibia ” exhibit is the largest living collection of native amphibians in the Northeast. Junior the snapping turtle, stolen from the Hatchery in 1998, has been preserved and is on display for visitors to see and learn his story. This building is named after Julia F. Fairchild, a local resident and leader in keeping the Hatchery open after the State wanted to close it.
