The Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s Education programs provide opportunities for students, educators and parents throughout Georgia and the Southeast to experience the power of Shakespeare’s language and dramatic vision through play, passion, poetry, active participation and performance using dynamic, language-based methods.

We do this through interactive, fast-paced playshops in the classroom; useful, in-depth study guides for all our school programs and performances; in-school and after-school residencies of varying lengths where the full power of Shakespeare in performance can be experienced by your entire school and summer programs that delve deep into the world of Shakespeare performance and study for students and teachers alike.

 

Student Matinees

All weekday matinee shows begin at 10 AM.

Tickets are $14 each, except for our $10 preview matinee performances (listed). Availability is subject to change. Ticket sales are tax exempt if paid by school check or school credit card; otherwise 8% Fulton Co. sales tax will be added

From study guides to interactive in-school workshops, here’s an overview of what we can offer.

Playshops in Performance

Suggested for grades 3-12

We call them ‘Playshops’ because they feel much more like play than work! Students will gain new insights into Shakespeare’s relevance while experiencing the power of his language when they get out of their seats and on their feet, exploring Shakespeare’s text with trained teaching artists who also make up our professional acting company. Our Playshop in Performance is the #1 most requested program we offer–often in combination with student matinee attendance–and is the best way to introduce the ‘play’ behind the play.

Shakespeare Says!

Suggested for grades 1-5

This exciting and highly interactive event introduces the language and style of Shakespeare’s plays to your elementary school students using A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the art of storytelling. The workshop encourages creative play, cooperation and successful participation for all kids.

Playing Shakespeare Funny

Suggested for grades 10-12

Designed for older students who have had some exposure to dramatic literature or acting, this Playshop explores one of Shakespeare’s popular comedies (Much Ado about Nothing, A Midsummer Night’s Dream or The Taming of the Shrew) for all types of funny. We’ll discuss rhetoric and comedy ‘rules’ that can be followed or broken to great comedic (and dramatic) effect.

Design Your Own Shakespeare Classroom!

Nothing helps students forge personal connections to Shakespeare’s poetry quite so well as the chance to explore his words on stage. If you would like to provide your students a deeper experience with Shakespearean drama than a 1-hour Playshop might afford, we can help. Our customizable Shakespeare Performance Residency program can meet your classroom needs and budget.

What if I don’t teach Shakespeare in my class, but I’d like to incorporate the arts and get my students on their feet?

Our work isn’t just for classes studying Shakespeare or theater arts! The same top-notch teaching artists from our professional acting ensemble also offer Playshops appropriate for classes teaching poetry curriculum’s, creative writing, history, classical civilization and more.

Playshops for Non-Shakespeare Curriculum’s

Suggested for Grades 3-12

  • Exploring Imagery and Figurative Language with A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Grades 3-8)

Play On! Theater Games to Build a Classroom

Suggested for Grades 1-12

ASC is thrilled to offer this new interactive workshop specifically tailored to your students. Play On! incorporates dramatic arts within the curriculum, harnessing the power and excitement of live theatre and the idea of ‘play’ to teach your students valuable classroom skills. Written through collaborating expertise of teaching artists and classroom teachers, this workshop offers games and exercises appropriate for any age group.

Renaissance Youth Residency

The Renaissance Youth Residency is an eight-week, language-based exploration of a Shakespeare play culminating in a full production. It focuses on the after-school activities of casting, rehearsing and producing a play by William Shakespeare. Students in the project can receive training in:

  • Stage combat, stagecraft, warm-up techniques
  • Acting, dance and voice work, and stage movement
  • Costume, makeup, lighting, and props/set design and construction
  • Backstage management, publicity and program/poster design
  • Dramaturgy, scholarship and research skills

Master Classes are available in:

  • Stage combat
  • Elizabethan dance
  • Shakespeare’s text in performance
  • Stage management, stage craft and design
  • Sound sculpture/effects, music and additional skills
  • Master classes can be opened to anyone in the school community, including parents, as well as the cast and crew of the show. The director of the production and trained Education Artists / professional ASC actors teach these classes.

Keystones of the Residency are:

  • Inclusiveness and participation for everyone
  • Creativity and a high level of polish in performance
  • A commitment to the over-all scholarship required when producing and performing Shakespeare.

Participation in the Residency will build:

  • Team work and time management skills
  • A sense of commitment and passion for a greater, creative good
  • Greater clarity and confidence in self-expression.
  • Enhanced empathetic listening skills.
  • Self-esteem and life-skills that can lead to future success in college and the greater world.

Shakespeare on Location

Bring a Full-length production of a Shakespeare Play to Your School

In the current school year ASC has already heard from a number of schools that their field trip opportunities are being reduced or even curtailed.  Never fear, Shakespeare Superheroes are here!  We are beginning to specialize in offering students an unparalleled opportunity to experience all the excitement of our professional performances at their home theatre.  Teachers share with us time and again that our performances are what Shakespeare is all about and we won’t let the high price of gas keep us from offering you the finest in Shakespeare performance.

Shakespeare on Location means our artists on your stage, bringing all the excitement of live performance and active learning to your students, and you don’t have to pay for the buses or worry about departure times, traffic, or who forgot to pack a lunch!

Performances may be scheduled on select Thursdays throughout the academic school year.

This is not an hour-long abridged/small cast performance but the same show you see when you bring your students to the Shakespeare Tavern®.  Give us a call immediately to book your tour, as these Thursdays will go quickly.

Customize your Shakespeare on Location experience with these options:

Performance Only

Thursday morning performance in your 400+ seat theatre, $14 a student, with a $5,500 minimum. Add a playshop for only $4.00 per student (a 43% discount off our regular playshop rate)

Performance Plus

This includes in-class work with all participating students. Our one-class period “playshops” are highly interactive. Up to five ASC Education Artists work with up to 50 kids at a time, dividing into smaller teams. Students work closely with an education artist in these smaller groups to unleash an exciting, immediate, and personal experience of Shakespeare’s language, which they quickly make their own in the acting process.  The playshops occur up to a week before the performance and the total cost for both is $16 per student.  We can even incorporate evening performances open to the entire community upon request! 375 student minimum.

Details:

In all cases the school must have an auditorium or theatre that seats at least 400, with working lighting system, and a clear, clean playing space 25 feet by 30 feet.  The proscenium must be a minimum of 14 feet tall, to accommodate our tour set. Also required are two dressing rooms (or equivalent nearby classroom space), access to restrooms and running water.  All we need to plan a performance or residency is your choice of dates, and a time to visit your school to confirm theatre specs.  Our tour office will take care of the rest!

All of the above most easily accommodates schools located within 50 miles of downtown Atlanta. For schools beyond this radius, special planning becomes necessary. Please contact the ASC box office as soon as possible and we can begin the planning process.

The Life and Works of William Shakespeare: Lecture – Demonstration

This fast-paced demonstration brings five costumed actors from our professional company to your school to present the story of Shakespeare’s life, illustrate the beauty of his words and to throw in a little Renaissance history for good measure. We draw from such works as Hamlet, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew and even the Sonnets, to illuminate Shakespeare’s life and career using some of his most beloved poetry. Mix in music, humor and even a little swordplay, and you’ve got yourself a pretty exciting class period!

This presentation has no cumbersome set to move in or out – it’s just our actors, your students, and the story of how a brilliant man created his immortal words. While we’re there, schedule a Playshop or two on the Shakespeare play you are studying with your students!

Lecture-demonstration and in-depth question and answer session runs 55 minutes. Pricing is $5.00 per student, and a minimum of 100 students (maximum 300). Scaled travel fee additional for distances more than 50 miles from ASC.

TADA! In-School and After-School Arts Education Programs

Through musical theater and drama led by caring, highly-skilled Teaching Artists – TADA! provides students with the opportunity to thrive both on stage and in life. Personal and creative growth take place in a structured and supportive environment where ensemble methods are taught to encourage cooperation and teamwork. These classes provide a forum for creative and emotional expression, while developing students’ concentration, discipline, teamwork, confidence and public-speaking ability. Classes are taught by two Teaching Artists (a director/choreographer and a music director) with extensive experience in music, theater, dance and education. All offerings are age appropriate. TADA! tailors its programs to meet the needs of the school, classroom and community being served.

IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY PROGRAMS

Through musical theater residencies held during the school day, TADA! engages students and teachers in active learning–through and about the arts during the classroom experience. TADA! uses theater to connect to school curricular units and gives students the skills to feel comfortable as musical theater performers. TADA! residencies incorporate the NYS Learning Standards and the NYC DOE Blueprint For Teaching and Learning in the Arts and provide a forum for creative and academic expression, while developing concentration, discipline, teamwork, confidence and public speaking ability.

In-School Residencies include:

  • Musical Theater Skills Building Residency: Students learn the skills necessary to participate as musical theater performers. Class begins with vocal exercises, acting games, stretching and dance. Students also learn musical numbers from TADA!’s repertoire of over 30 original musicals, written expressly for performance by children. Material may be chosen around a topic or concept from the current classroom curriculum.
  • Musical Theater Writing Residency: Students learn the skills involved in writing, composing and performing an original musical. Under the guidance of professional writers and composers, students create the libretto and score for an original musical. Students then rehearse and perform their original musical. This residency incorporates the academic curriculum extensively. The residency may also allow students to explore important issues in their lives. Past scripts have focused on topics as varied as immigration, Greek mythology, neighborhood history, teamwork and drug prevention.
  • Literacy-Integrated Residencies: Students use material being read in class to explore literary themes using drama, movement and song in preparation for an assembly program at the final session.
  • Professional Development: Classroom teachers learn how to incorporate theater arts, music and dance into their curriculum. (More information below.)

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

After the school day, students learn the necessity of teamwork as they put together an ensemble performance piece involving dance steps, songs and scenes. These workshops help to improve the group dynamic by addressing varying learning and behavioral styles. In addition, these programs help children develop theater skills.

After-School Programs include:

  • Musical Theater Skills Building: Students learn the music, dance and theater skills needed to become competent musical theater actors. Music is drawn from TADA!’s repertoire of over 30 original musicals which were written expressly for performance by children.   • Musical Theater Play Building: For schools interested in a more in-depth residency program, TADA! offers a two-part creation and production workshop. Students create an original mini-musical or play, rehearse the scenes and songs, and perform it for the school community. This format may use thematic material as suggested by the school. Students work on their writing and performance skills, and the use of musical numbers to promote fun, active learning. Our 99 seat theater is available not only for theater and dance performances, workshops or readings, but also for recitals, meetings, presentations, film shoots and much more. The stage is 24? x 30? with a lighting grid at 11? and the rental includes lighting and sound equipment and piano. Walk in and be audience-ready in just a couple of hours.

Not ready for an audience just yet? Then use our studio for your class, rehearsal or meetings. The studio is 25? x 30? and includes mirrors (optional), piano, portable sound system and TV with DVD Player. Table, chairs and cube blocks are also available for use.

Bring TADA! Camps to Your Organization

Bring TADA!’s popular Camps to your school, camp, day care, community center or business! With programs across the metro area, TADA! delivers great musical theater programs for kids in your community. Families and friends love applauding their kids’ mini-musicals as much as the children love creating and performing them.

Similar to TADA!s on-site Week-long Camps, students rehearse and perform songs, choreography and scenes based on original TADA! shows and selections from Broadway over a five-day period (longer camps are also available). On the last day of the program, kids present their own mini-musical in a final performance for family and friends.

Personal and creative growth takes place in a structured and supportive environment. Ensemble methods are taught to encourage cooperation and positive, creative expression as kids develop their theatrical skills. Each camp has a unique theme and different musical numbers–depending on your program goals.

School Groups Grades 1-12

Slater Mill is the birthplace of modern American industry. As part of their visit, students will be taken through three buildings:

In the Slater Mill, opened in 1793, students will see the original factory floor and machine layout as it was in Mr. Slater’s day. Interpreters will guide students through the history of the industrial revolution, periodically bringing the tour to life with various demonstrations of the still-working factory equipment.

In the Wilkinson Mill, opened in 1810, students will see the machine tool shop used to service Mr. Slater’s original mill. Students will see a working 16,000 pound water wheel in the shop’s wheel pit. Upstairs, our interpreters will explain how the factory transferred power from the Blackstone River into real working machines. Students will see massive gears moving overhead that power the still-functioning drills, lathes, and other machines.

In the 1758 Sylvanus Brown House students will see how a middle class artisan family would have lived in the late 18th century prior to the industrial revolution. Here, interpreters will demonstrate pre-industrial manufactures techniques so students can better understand the true meaning of the factory manufacturing methods they will see in the other buildings.

Students will also visit the nearby Visitor Center, which features a large floor map and a film that lend historical background and modern perspective to the students’ visit.

Jencks Education Center at Slater Mill

Established in memory of Davis Jencks, The Jencks Education Center is Slater Mill’s major initiative to link knowledge of the past with the rich opportunities of modern Pawtucket. The Center hosts a variety of arts and handcraft workshops, educational programs, after school learning opportunities, and business and group events. In conjunction with the Center , the Slater Mill Gallery across Roosevelt Avenue in the Visitor Center exhibits the work of local and national artists and craftspeople. The adjoining gift shop serves as an outlet to purchase their work.

The Jencks Education Center is located on the physically accessible second floor of Slater Mill. The Board of Trustees has made a deliberate choice to honor the historic character of the interior of Slater Mill. With the exception of a bit of paint and floor repair, the Center maintains the building’s historic authenticity. Our architect, Luke Mandle, designed fixtures and furnishings that reflect an industrial feel as opposed to a colonial reproduction style that would confuse visitors and chip away at the true integrity of the mill space.

Our Jencks Education Center

The Innovation Room is a gorgeous space with banks of windows overlooking the Blackstone River on three sides. This room serves up to 60 people and has been outfitted with conference/work tables using recycled textile machinery as bases. It is fully wired for technology. The room serves rental needs for retreats, corporate meetings, community programs, the Mill’s own interpretation programs with school children and as a space for workshops with regional and national craftspeople.

The Confluence Room is an extremely inviting library with large, comfortable seating and warm lighting. It also serves as a breakout space for meetings held in the Innovation Room.

The Artifact Access Space use an innovative collection storage method (currently being put into use at the RISD Museum and across the country) called “visible storage” to bring our vast collection to the public. We rotate exhibitions of tools, historical documents, textiles, printing items, early hand machines, and other items so that students, historians, artists and the public can study, read, draw and explore the fantastic collection that was once hidden away in a physically inaccessible third floor archive.

In addition to the in-school curriculum opportunities that Slater Mill currently offers, the Jencks Education Center addresses the need for after school programming, offering various lessons for middle and high school students. We work with urban schools in the surrounding metro areas to provide quality hands-on after school opportunities for a new generation of youth. Our programs include woodworking and textile projects that demonstrate the applied use of science, math, art and communication in a group setting.

TUBING GROUP TERMS:

  1. All participants must be at least 42 inches tall and no more than 300 pounds.
  2. All participants must sign a tubing release form, and if under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign with name of participant.
  3. Single riders only, one person per tube.
  4. Rates quoted apply only to groups of 20 or more and group agrees to a non-refundable deposit to be charged to a credit card if cancellation is not made more than 48 hours prior to scheduled visit.
  5. Group rates are available Monday-Friday/Non-Holiday, there are no group discounts on Saturdays, Sundays, or Holidays.
  6. Group assumes full responsibility for tickets ordered and agrees to make final accounting of all monies the day of visit. No refunds will be extended for unused tickets after the final number is confirmed 48 hours prior to visit. (School voucher payment due within 60 days of signing)
  7. Resale of tickets is unlawful and subject to prosecution.
  8. Participants will be given the tubing tickets upon arrival at Campgaw.  If additional tickets are needed on the day of your visit, you MUST present a copy of the contract to Customer Service to receive the applicable group rate.
  9. Non-Profit/Tax-Exempt Groups must provide valid tax-exempt form at time of reservation. The full payment must be made by the tax-exempt group to receive the tax exemption.
  10. Campgaw reserves the right to limit/close operations of any part of the facility for capacity limitations, safety and operating reasons, and inclement weather. Also, some activities may not be accessible to everyone due to weight/height restrictions.
  11. If Campgaw closes on your scheduled visit date, the Group Leader will be notified as soon as possible. If your group needs to reschedule a visit, an advanced notice of at least 48 hour is required.
  12. Campgaw’s operating season is scheduled from mid-December thru mid-March (weather permitting). Hours of operation are subject to change without notice.

We provide pre-K-12 students with fun learning experiences that integrate in-depth observation and interpretation of art and historical exhibits, and hands-on art-making activities. All of our school programs emphasize Common Core standards, particularly in English Language Arts and New York City’s Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.

Long-term residencies

We collaborate with schools to create initiatives specific to the interests, needs, and culture of each school, ranging from multi-year residencies to one-time workshops. The Queens Museum Education Department works with our partner schools to create customized residencies that integrate the Museum’s resources into programming that supports the goals of each school community. Residencies can emphasize arts objectives and focus on art technique, art history, and exhibition design or they can mirror classroom instruction and support Common Core academic objectives. Residencies can be project-based or integrated into service learning projects. They can be designed to reach every student in the school community or to strategically target subgroups of students; for example, those not enrolled in art classes or those who might benefit the most from alternative learning experiences and settings. Regardless of the specific program design, the Education Department’s goal is to collaborates with school partners to develop programming that utilizes Museum resources to maximize the benefit to students. These resources include:

  • Diverse and critically acclaimed exhibitions The Museum presents historical exhibitions that speak directly to local and contemporary New York City issues, and cutting-edge, critically acclaimed contemporary art exhibitions and projects that are global in scope.
  • Extensively-trained and accomplished Teaching Artists and Museum EducatorsOur roster of Teaching Artists and Educators are carefully selected and receive ongoing professional development and training.
  • Programming that supports academic standards Education programs have been developed to connect Museum experiences with common core literacy standards.

Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk Connecticut.jpg

Opened in July 1988, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to have a good time while learning about the vital natural resource just off our shore: Long Island Sound. Set in a refurbished 1860s factory at the mouth of the Norwalk River, the Aquarium building and its location reflect the region’s industrial past and human uses of Long Island Sound for recreation and commerce.

Visitors explore at their own pace, observing 34 exhibits featuring more than 1,200 marine animals of 259 species. The Long Island Sound journey begins along a freshwater river and the shallow waters of the salt marsh, then moves into deeper and deeper habitats out to the open ocean. These close encounters with animals, enhanced by friendly volunteer interpreters and informative display panels, educate visitors about the aquatic life of Long Island Sound and its watershed.

The sharks, seals, river otters, sea turtles and other animals, carefully tended in re-created natural settings, serve as ambassadors both for their species and the Sound’s natural environment. These intimate encounters are the heart of the learning experience and provide visitors – children especially – with a basis for understanding their role in the web of life.

Preschool-Class

The Maritime Aquarium offers exciting science-education experiences … in the Aquarium, in the field and at your school. The inspiration of this learning is Long Island Sound, perhaps familiar to students for its proximity but a fascinating unexplored world below the surface.

Interactions with our live animals and engaging science programs can help you inspire your students to become eager learners and young conservationists. We offer standards-based learning opportunities that make science a positive adventure for your students as they’re introduced to scientific concepts, processes and the importance of science in our lives today.

Of course, every visit to our nationally recognized aquarium is a fun and educational experience that gets your students up close to sharks, seals, river otters, sea turtles, jellyfish and dozens of other species native to Long Island Sound and its watershed. The Aquarium also has Connecticut’s largest IMAX movie theater. Documentaries on our six-story screen wil transport your students on an unforgettable learning adventure.

Educators voiced concerns. Aquarium donors answered. We have financial assistance available for Aquarium admission, IMAX® movies, programs and bus transportation costs. Some, but not all, financial aid is needs-based. Aid is limited and awarded on a first-come first-served basis. Book early! Enjoy it all at the Aquarium or in the field. Or a Traveling Teacher will bring the fun and learning right into your classroom or auditorium, or to a nearby park, pond, stream or beach.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk brings Long Island Sound Marine Science to Your School

Have the Aquarium visit your school! Except where noted, each 45-minute presentation is for groups of up to 28 students and costs $165 plus additional travel fees. Discounts are given for multiples of the same program held on the same day in the same classroom: $100 for the second program, $95 for the third and $90 for each additional.

Additional charges may include: a “layover fee” for gaps of an hour or more between classes; travel charges; and parking fees.

Pre-K and Kindergarten

“House for Hermit Crab”

Students follow along month by month as they listen to this classic book about a year in the life of a young hermit crab. They use their senses and sharpen observational and verbal skills as they share what they notice and ask questions. They handle some live animals from the story and look for similarities and differences in various crabs, including an invasive species.Program duration dependent on the students’ attention spans.

Living vs. Non-Living

For kindergarten only. Through a guided discussion, students share their observations about the characteristics of living and once-living organisms, as well as non-living things. They compare and contrast two live animals of the same grouping.

Sharks!

For ages 4 & up only.  Members of the same group of animals can look and behave very differently. For example, herring and sharks are both fish, but have distinct differences in their size, color and habits. Activities include touching shark teeth, measuring themselves against a life-sized shark puzzle they assemble, and weighing out food for the Aquarium’s sharks.

Grades 1 & 2

Intertidal Animals

By observing and touching a variety of live intertidal animals, students learn about these creatures’ different structures and behaviors. Activities focus on how these animals meet their basic needs for oxygen, food, water, shelter and space.

Sea Turtle Life Cycle

After hearing a story about the life cycle of a loggerhead sea turtle, students play a counting game that teaches about the needs of turtles and demonstrates how and why few survive from hatchling to adult. Students look for special structures and behaviors that help sea turtles meet their basic needs, and discuss ways they can help protect these ancient creatures.

Whales and Dolphins

Is a dolphin a whale? How do scientists group whales? How are you like a whale? Students observe and describe similarities and differences, measure themselves against a life-sized whale puzzle, learn about conservation issues and participate in activities that demonstrate whale and dolphin adaptations.

Grades 3 & 4

Life Between the Tides

The intertidal zone is a unique habitat in which organisms have different behavioral and structural adaptations to survive the rising and falling of tides every day. Students will learn about the moon’s effect on tides, as they read a tide chart for the day of their visit and discuss how the organisms depend on the living and non-living features of the environment for survival. And they share observations and ask questions as they notice and handle a variety of live intertidal invertebrates.

Sharks and Fish

Animals have structural adaptations for getting food, such as specialized teeth or a keen sense of smell. Students will work in teams to rotate through stations focusing on the animals’ adaptations and survival strategies, the similarities between sharks and other fish, and conservation issues. Activities include measuring out the amount of food that the Aquarium feeds its sharks, observing physical adaptations of a fish, and touching shark jaws, skin and other artifacts.

Squid

Squid have very unique behavioral and structural adaptations for survival, and they depend on living and non-living components of their environment. Students observe and ask about these adaptations and interactions as they learn dissection skills. They also compare and contrast squid with other mollusks, such as snails and clams.

Grades 5-8

Brine Shrimp Inquiry (for Grades 5-6)

Available only as a 90-minute program. Through a guided inquiry experiment, students investigate how brine shrimp respond to different stimuli while implementing the basics of the scientific method. Students work in groups for formulate a hypothesis, note observations, chance variables and state results. $265 for first program, $185 for others on the same day.

Intertidal Habitat

The intertidal zone is a unique ecosystem in which organisms have different adaptations to sense and respond to information about their environment as the tides rise and fall. Students learn about the moon’s effect on tides, as they read a tide chart for the day of their visit and discuss challenges for animals living in the intertidal zone and the physical factors with which they interact. Students share observations and ask questions as they notice and handle a variety of intertidal invertebrates.

Marine World Magnified

The unseen marine world opens up to students as they learn to use hand lenses and microscopes to observe a variety of live animals. Students compare the structure of the eye to a microscope. They then use books and charts to identify the creatures they have seen. Food chains and human impacts are discussed.

Squid Anatomy

Through dissection, students explore how squid sense and respond to their environment by examining a squid’s unique physical adaptations, including the exceptionally large eyes. Students also compare and contrast squid to other mollusks such as clams and snails.

Environmental Issues for Grades 3-8

These 45-minute programs introduce students to some of the environmental issues facing the world today/ Students learn about many of the impacts these issues have on our climate, wildlife, ecosystems, everyday living and Long Island Sound. Solutions to current issues are discussed. (Many activities relate to state Social Studies standards too.)

Climate Change

Through an interactive presentation, students learn the differences between climate and weather, the basic of the greenhouse effect, and how carbon cycles through the environment. Through discussion and hands-on activities, students discover how climate change impacts our weather, wildlife and everyday living. They’ll also brainstorm for solutions that can be implemented in their own lives and communities.

Invasive Species

An ecosystem is composed of all populations that are living in a certain space and the physical factors with which they interact. The introduction of non-native plants or animals can have a negative impact on an ecosystem. Students will take part in fun hands-on activities while exploring the environmental impacts of invasive species that can now be found in Long Island Sound. Students also will learn what they can do to prevent further spreading of exotic species.

Water Pollution

Most precipitation that falls in Connecticut eventually reaches Long Island Sound. This water moving across and through the earth carries with it the products of human activities. With Long Island Sound’s extensive watershed as an example, discover the impact of humans on aquatic ecosystems. Students will share their observations as they “pollute” a watershed model, then look for ways to clean it up. Hands-on discovery of basic scientific and ecological concepts.

Traveling Teacher for Large Goups

Dr. LivingSound® Traveling Science Show!

For Grades 2-6

This lively 45-minute program, for up to 200 students, incorporates drama, surprise and humor to introduce students to Long Island Sound’s environment and the issues that concern it. Our Dr. LivingSound® character (played by a Maritime Aquarium educator) draws students into hands-on demonstrations that teach how science connects to the marine world. Using water as its central topic, “the good doctor” introduces students to the Sound’s watershed, explains the water cycle and examines the different ways we use water.
Cost is $525. Discounts available for multiple presentations on the same day: $275 each additional presentation. Additional charges may include a “layover fee” for gaps of one hour or more between classes, travel charges, and any parking fees.

Touch Tank for a Day!

A great bonus for Field Days, Science Fairs or Family Nights
We’ll set up a supervised touch tank with live tidal-pool creatures and animal artifacts. A great hands-on learning-station enhancement to any event!
Cost: $165 for the first hour, $100 for second hour, $95 for third hour and $90 for each additional hour.

Long Island Sound Day

We can arrange a day at your school so that several grades, or all students, can experience our unique program.
Our Long Island Sound Day includes an initial indoor assembly program (for up to 200) with a PowerPoint presentation, then in one-hour blocks students can rotate through a variety of stations that include our live tide-pool animals. Other stations could include topics on whales, sharks or invasive species.

Learning, fun and inspiration don’t have to stop when the dismissal bell sounds. The Maritime Aquarium’s staff of educators will work with you to design a customized after-school program, conducted at your school, that will both entertain your students and supplement their school day learning!

Ocean Explorers 1
This multi-week hands-on program engages students in learning about Long Island Sound. Students will investigate fish, crabs, mollusks, turtles, marine mammals and more.

Ocean Explorers 2
This multi-week program engages students in hand-on experiences, in such topics as sharks, whales, pollution, coral reefs and live intertidal animals from Long Island Sound.

Grades 3-8
(Activities are adjusted to be group-appropriate.)
Animal Adaptation Package
This multi-week series introduces students to animals and plants of Long Island Sound. Includes squid & fish dissections, sharks, intertidal habitats and microscope use.

Environmental Issues Package
This multi-week series focuses on such environmental issues as climate change, invasive species, water pollution, frogs and turtles.

Schoolyard Science
This multiweek series utilizes your schoolyard as a classroom. Students investigate what plants and animals live there and the human impact on that environment.

Seashore Biodiversity Package
For schools within driving distance of a beach, this multi-week series focuses on Long Island Sound. Students are introduced to the animals and habitats of Long Island Sound, the scientific method and the collection of data.

Field Programs

Field-Program-at-Cove-Beach

These programs get students out in nature, where they’ll practice developing their science-inquiry, literacy and numeracy skills. Please note special prices and times. For a Field Ecology program conducted at your site, adjacent free parking is required. Travel fees may apply. School must pay parking fees.

Also:

  • Aquarium admission is optional.
  • If you have more than 28 students, you must book multiple programs.
  • The 7:1 student:chaperone ratio applies.
  • Field Ecology programs are conducted only around low tide. Students will get their feet wet! Wear boots or shoes that can get soggy, and dress for the weather!

Visit to the Seashore

Students get out to the water’s edge for the excitement of being “in the field.” They’ll use their senses – plus some scientific sampling techniques – during a discovery tour looking for – and learning about – living and non-living things at the sandy shore, rocky shore and tidal marsh habitats. Explore a Long Island Sound shoreline near The Maritime Aquarium or at your local beach. (School must supply beach entry pass, if necessary.) 2 hours.

Shoreline Exploration

Explore a Long Island Sound shoreline near The Maritime Aquarium or at your local beach. (School must supply beach entry pass, if necessary.) Learn about the geological processes that helped create our tidal marshes, rocky shores and sandy beaches. Students use scientific equipment to collect animals and test water composition, then consider the changing habitats, varying needs and adaptations of animals living in these marine environments. Other topics include tides, invasive species and habitat conservation. 2 hours.

EdVenture is the largest children’s museum in the Southeastr, located in Columbia, South Carolina. EdVenture opened to the public in 2003. It has 8 galleries covering 67,000 square feet, plus hands-on exhibits, 2 resource centers, and a 200-seat theater. 40,000 square feet of the total 67,000 square feet is devoted to exhibit galleries, laboratories and visitor amenities. An additional 7,000 square feet of outdoor gallery space is located just outside the museum’s front door. Within the total 74,000 square feet there are approximately 350 individual hands-on exhibits. There is also a statue of ‘Eddie’ on the first floor of the museum which children can climb into and learn about the insides of people. It is located at 211 Gervais Street in midtown Columbia, next to the South Carolina State Museum.

Schedule

Overview

  • Field studies last 120 minutes including a 45 minute program filled with age-appropriate, SC Educational Standards-based activities led by an EdVenture educator. The remaining 75 minutes of the visit are devoted to museum exploration.
  • Field studies can be scheduled for Tuesday through Friday.
  • The minimum number of participants is 15. Students may be divided into groups in order to ensure a successful program.
  • One adult is required for every seven children.
  • During your visit, feel free to stop by EdCetera®, the EdVenture store.

EdVenture Classroom Field Studies include a 45-minute program with age-appropriate, standards-based activities led by an EdVenture Educator.

Chelsea Piers has two locations where seniors can celebrate High School graduations — the Field House and the Sports Center.

Located between Pier 61 and Pier 62, the Field House is an 80,000 square foot multi-sport facility featuring indoor soccer fields and basketball courts, batting cages, a massive gymnastics center with in-ground trampolines and an indoor climbing wall.

At Pier 60, the Sports Center is home to basketball courts, the largest indoor climbing wall in the Northeast, NYC’s only indoor sand volleyball court, an indoor track and a boxing ring. Woodland Indian Life (PreK – 6th grade)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Connecticut or New York when only the Native Americans lived here? What did the land look like? How did people eat, sleep and survive? Travel back in time with us to explore the natural environment of our region over 600 years ago. Students will explore: natural history, ecology, Native culture and early engineering.

Animal Adaptations (PreK – 5th grade)

Animals are amazing! They have evolved over time to use their covering, color and physical structure to adapt, camouflage, survive, and escape danger. Through a study of animal pelts and animal mounts, students will explore the different ways that vertebrates (mammals, reptiles, fish and birds) use their adaptations to survive in various environments. The workshop also introduces students to the concepts of patterns and classification.

I Am an Archaeologist (2nd – 5th grade)

How do archaeologists work? What kinds of artifacts do they collect and why? How do they interpret artifacts? Students take part in an archeological “dig” of a Woodland Indian site and use critical thinking and communication skills as they work in teams, recording and interpreting artifacts. This program complements “Woodland Indian Life.” A discount is offered when both are requested for the same school group.

Coastal Ecology (PreK – middle school)

The Long Island Sound is home to numerous remarkable creatures. This marine ecosystem right outside our door teaches us not only about natural history and biology, but also aquatic ecology and invertebrate structure and function. Dive into a comparative study of the invertebrates that populate the Sound by exploring our marine tank. The workshop also increases student familiarity with categorization, animal classification, and interdependence through the study of food chains and webs.

Mineral Marvels (3rd – 5th grade)

What is a mineral? Where are they found and what can we learn from them? Our expansive collection of minerals and rocks invites children into a deep exploration of these important abiotic members of our environment. Students will utilize the scientific process to examine properties of minerals and how they are classified.

Butterflies (PreK – 2nd grade)

Who hasn’t stopped to watch butterflies fly by? These beautiful creatures are a wonderful way to explore insect structure and function. In this workshop, we use games and art to invite students into the world of butterflies, examining their body structure, life cycle, and symmetrical decorative patterns.

With a body of work composed almost entirely of portraits, Chuck Close has been investigating the mechanics of vision for more than four decades. The fluidity of his approach, and the intensity of his engagement with each of his print forays makes Close an exemplary figure of the post-war New York art world. Organized with the participation of the artist himself and supplemented with loans from local collectors and Bruce Museum supporters, Closer: The Graphic Art of Chuck Close will present the finest and most intriguing examples of this great modern master’s oeuvre.

Oysters, Pearls of Long Island Sound

Found in estuaries around the world, oysters are a favored delicacy for humans and play a valuable role in ecosystems and economies. These unassuming mollusks have sustained Native Americans, cleaned polluted harbors, provided critical habitat, and created waterside cultures. The exhibition will feature hands-on interactive displays, videos, and historical objects that appeal to all ages.

Inside the Artist’s Studio: Small-scale Views 

This exhibition celebrates a three-decade long Bruce Museum holiday tradition of exhibiting “small scale” constructions, with a focus on artists looking at artists. Exhibited are Richard Haas (b. 1939), Joe Fig (b. 1968), and Lori Nix’s (b. 1969) own individual investigations and analyses of the creative process in three-dimensional miniature constructions as well as in painting, printmaking, and photography.

In the Dark: Animal Survival Strategies

In this immersive, entertaining, and family-friendly exhibition, people of all ages will discover how animals adapt to living in the dark. The show features natural dioramas of caves, deep soil, nighttime forest and desert, along with mechanical, electronic and digital interactives. This exhibition is organized by the Cincinnati Museum Center.

Ed Clark: American Photojournalist

Ed Clark (1911-2000) was the quintessential American news photographer who covered the personalities and events that shaped the Golden Age of print media. Lauded during his lifetime for the telling details and emotional drama of his imagery, this exhibition revisits the life and work of this legendary cameraman.

Pasture to Pond: Connecticut Impressionism

At the turn of the twentieth century there was a concentration of artists working in Connecticut in the newly imported style of the French Impressionists. These artists, who came of age in a rapidly industrializing world, sought a more intimate, bucolic and orderly landscape. This exhibition speaks to the quality and beauty of this perennially popular art.

Extreme Habitats: Into the Deep Sea

Program Descriptions

Woodland Indian Life 
Native American artifacts and reproductions are used to help recreate the life of a Woodland Indian family before colonial contact.

Crusty Crabs/ Coastal Ecology 
Through careful, hands-on observation of live crabs and other small seashore animals, children learn about the structure and characteristics of crabs and other crustaceans, and their place in the seashore community and the food web.

Shapes and Patterns
Children will define 5 basic shapes, find shapes in natural objects from museum collections, and create patterns and symmetry. Pattern activity included

Animals in my Backyard/ Animal Adaptations
Different body coverings, colors and physical structures help vertebrates adapt to their environment, find food and escape from predators. Students learn these concepts while handling fur pelts and mounted mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.

Butterflies 
Students explore symmetry in nature while learning about the structure of butterflies and insects. The life cycle, adaptations, habitats, and camouflage patterns of butterflies and insects are also introduced. Museum specimens and photographs create a visually comprehensive classroom experience

Dinosaurs
Fossilized dinosaur bones, teeth, footprints, and other parts are used by students to reconstruct the size, food preferences, and movement of these ‘terrible lizards’. Comparison is made between dinosaurs and modern animals. Through observation and comparison, students become paleontologists, conducting their own fossil dig.

Desert Ecology
Students investigate the properties of a desert ecosystem and discuss special adaptations of the animals and plants that inhabit these areas. Experimentation and handling Museum specimens provide hands-on activities for the students

Rock Detectives
This program allows students to observe demonstrations of the geologic processes that cause the rock cycle, and even become a part of the rock cycle themselves! Rock samples, demonstrations of Pangaea and plate tectonics, and interactive activities encourage students to use their hands and minds to explore earth’s dynamic processes. As their final element of detective work, students will act as geologists working in teams to deduce where their rock came from in the earth, how it formed, and what type of rock it is.

Skeletons
Students will identify the location and purpose of major bones in humans and animals and develop related vocabulary. Through discussion, demonstration and hands-on activities, students will distinguish between endoskeletons and exoskeletons and describe the functions of a skeleton. Students will dissect owl pellets to uncover and identify rodent bones.

Middle School and High School

Classroom Programs are one hour in length.

Prehistoric Peoples 
Award-winning, traveling exhibition presented by instructors from the Archaeological Associates of Greenwich (AAG) enables students to handle authentic prehistoric tools while learning about the progress of humankind from 4 million to 5,000 years ago. Slides and artifacts stress ancient peoples’ adaptations to their changing environment. Slide projector and world map required.

Egypt 
Instructors from the Archaeological Associates of Greenwich (AAG) offer stories behind the fabled pyramids, kings and queens of ancient Egypt’s Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. Sites and artifacts are shown with emphasis on the life of young people. Adaptation to the harsh desert environment is stressed.

Assembly Programs are one hour in length, and can accommodate up to a full auditorium.
Fee: $195 per program.

After-School Brucemobile Series

Students will be led through hands-on and conceptual lesson plans by an experienced Bruce Museum Instructor. Afterschool Series incorporate more activities and crafts than traditional classroom programs, as is appropriate to the afterschool setting. After-School Brucemobile Programs are available in a series of 4, 6, or 8 sessions.

Habitats: the World Around Us (Grades 2-5)
Habitats: The World Around Us introduces students to the earth’s diverse habitats. They will compare and contrast the regional Long Island Sound and Woodland habitats, examining how animals and humans live and survive in these environments as well as exploring the consequences of acts of nature and humans on these ecosystems. Students will have the opportunity to model life in the intertidal zone, simulate the impacts and clean up efforts of an oil spill, perform skits of animal’s behaviors in all seasons, and act as archaeologists to examine Native American artifacts. In culmination of their work, each student will create a snow globe diorama of his or her favorite habitat, incorporating the themes discussed throughout the program.

Artist’s Workshop (Grades 2-5)
The Artist’s Workshop exposes students to a wide range of artistic styles and techniques. Each of the sessions is directly related to exhibitions currently or previously on view at the Bruce Museum (sessions are subject to change based on the Museum’s exhibition schedule). Students will have the opportunity to closely examine reproductions of famous works of art, learn about different artistic styles and historical periods, and experiment with relevant artistic techniques.

Nature Adventure Series (Grades K-5)
The Nature Adventure Series offers an exciting series of programs with a central focus of exploring the many concepts of the natural world! This series covers the broadest range of topics of our afterschool selections. Children will step into the shoes of a paleontologist and study dinosaurs; get hands-on experiences with live animals from the Long Island Sound; discover the different skeletal structures animals have adapted; learn about local bird species and what they eat through an always popular owl pellet dissection; and many more fascinating sessions. This series can be tailored to the center’s needs.

Our nature trails traverse ponds, salt marshes, forests and meadows where visitors will see shore birds, migrating flocks, and a variety of small animals. Or, visitors can attend one of APEC’s many environmentally-informed programs for children and adults. Please explore our website to learn more.

APEC is dedicated to establishing awareness, understanding and appreciation of the environment and to preserving nature in an urban setting. The building is open 7 days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except for major holidays. Please check the calendar for closures. Walking trails are open from dawn to dusk, year ‘round. Parking and entrance to the building and grounds is free.

School Group Programs (Pre-K to 5th Grade) at Alley Pond Environmental Center

Kindergarten through Grade 5 Programs

APEC provides class visits for thousands of school children each year. All workshops provide educational concepts about various aspects of Alley Pond Park’s living environment that will enrich the New York City and State science curriculum objectives.

K through Grade 5 programs incorporate some standards from the following:

 

  Science Standard 1, Analysis, Inquiry and Design;
  Science Standard 2, Information Systems; and
  Science Standard 4, the Living Environment.

Classes are held rain or shine; please dress accordingly – boots in wet weather, coats and hats in the cold, insect repellent in the spring.

Classes may bring lunch, and eat at our outdoor picnic tables, weather permitting. No indoor lunch facilities are available.

Discipline is always the responsibility of the class teacher. Adult supervision is mandatory. We recommend one adult chaperone for every six children.

 1 Hour Workshop: Includes live animals and a nature walk

 1 Hour and 15 minutes Workshop: Same as above plus a theme-related craft to take back to the classroom.

Appropriate for grades Pre-K through Middle School. Our experienced staff can pack up any of the following 8 programs (all include live animals) and bring to your classroom.

Since all programs involve full group participation with hands-on specimens, we set a maximum group size to 30 students per presentation (Pre-K=25)
Programs are limited to 3 classes per day

Animals Alive

Our most popular outreach program! Live animal presentations include discussions on animal classifications, habitats and adaptations using open-ended questioning and hands-on learning techniques. Program can include: mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Native Americans

Observe and handle artifacts from the Mattinecocks, one of the 13 tribes on Long Island that spoke the Algonquin language. Compare and contrast modern lifestyles and those of the 1500′s. Learn about their customs, survival techniques and conservation practices. Instructor demonstrates how to make a bow and arrow out of willow branches…class keeps it!

Pond Power

Students learn  all about pond life including native animals and plants.  Instructor brings pond boards and pin-up animals to demonstrate a typical pond.  Children will meet a live pond resident and discuss food webs and amphibian metamorphosis

Earthworms

Earthworms teach young children sensitivity to living things and illustrate the interdependency of life.  Students interact with and handle these often misunderstood creatures.  Through hands-on activities and discussion, children will learn the earthworm’s physical characteristics, habitats, and special adaptations.

Birds of a Feather

This program will introduce students to the world of birds.  Children will explore the adaptations birds have developed to survive in different ecosystems, their life cycle and predator/prey relationships.  Students learn these concepts and develop their observation skills while examining feathers, eggs, nests, skulls and talons.

Time For Trees

Instructor visits your classroom and reviews photosynthesis, the forest food web and biodiversity with an interactive forest community activity.  Program includes a visit from a forest native…the Common Eastern Box Turtle.

Insect Investigation

This program offers students insight into the world of insects.  With the use of bug viewers, each child will get the opportunity to examine live crickets up close.  Students will learn the body parts of insects, their life cycles and their interrelationship with other animals, plants and their environment.

School Group Programs (6th to 12th Grade) at Alley Pond Environmental Center

Our secondary education programs focus on supplementing Junior High, Regent’s and Advanced Placement curricula in the sciences. Through hands-on experiences implementing the scientific method with environmental testing, sampling, and observations in the field, students gain a true sense of ecology in New York City’s natural habitats.

All programs provide educational concepts about various aspects of Alley Pond Park’s living environment that will enrich the NYC science curriculum objectives.

We begin scheduling for the current school year on the day after Labor Day.

Middle School and High School programs are generally 2 hours in length. Programs include a walk on
