Howell Living History Farm.jpg
101 Hunter Road, Titusville, Hopewell Township, NJ, United States 27.52 mi

Howell Living History Farm is a time machine that takes you back to the year 1900 – a time when horses and buggies traveled the lanes of Pleasant Valley, and when farms were bordered by snake fences and Osage orange trees.

You were a farmer, then…the kind that could drive a team of horses and plow a furrow with a walking plow. You could build a barn, or deliver a lamb, or bake a loaf of bread from wheat that you grew yourself. And you may have been remembered for the time you canned 200 quarts of tomatoes in a day, or the May Day you went to town in a one-horse sleigh.

Today, if it is time to harvest corn, you can ride up into a field in a horse drawn wagon, help us shock and pick corn, and return to the barnyard to help shell it, grind it, and bake it into cornbread. We invite you to help us plant, cultivate and harvest our crops, to care for our animals, to sweep our barn, to make soap, butter and ice cream, and of course to sit under the maple tree and talk about the future. (The future looks good, by the way. There are rumors of “combines”, horseless buggies and automatic ice cream makers.)

Summer Camp & Scout Group Programs

Program Fees

All programs except for “Farm Animals” and “Summer on the Farm” are $75.00 for in-county visitors and $100.00 for out-of-county visitors for each group of 25 people or less. (This includes adult chaperones as well).

Farm Animals is $4.00 per person (in-county); and $5.00 per person (out-of-county) .

The Summer on the Farm program is $100.00 for in-county and $125.00 for out-of-county.

Farm Programs:

Ice Harvesting: Work with farmers on the frozen pond, where volunteers from your group will help to score, cut and float ice. Everyone will help when it is time to pull the ice blocks up a wooden track to the icehouse. Blocks are lowered into the icehouse via a chute, and then packed in layers of sawdust. (If there is no ice on the pond, your group will work with commercial ice just as farmers did in 1900 if winters were mild.)

Tree Tapping and Sap Gathering: Learn how to identify a sugar maple tree. Volunteers from your group will help us tap a sugar maple tree. All will taste the sap if it is flowing before beginning the work of collecting it from the many trees in our “sugarbush”. You will load some of the sap on a horse or oxen drawn wagon to take back to the farm for syrup making.

Sheep Care: Learn about the care of our sheep as you pet the lambs, help brush the ewes, and visit the flock in the sheep yard. Help process wool using our hand cranked carding machine to prepare it for spinning. Learn about the many uses for wool products on a 1900 family farm.

FARM ANIMALS PROGRAM: Station Activities

Corn Planting: Learn about corn planting technology by using hand sowing methods used throughout history…and by planting corn using a circa 1900, animal-drawn seeder. Discover why seeders like this one – and why tractor-drawn seeders- are still “future” technology for most of the world’s farmers

Wagon Tour of Farming Operations: Old-fashioned horsepower will pull your wagon into a landscape reminiscent of the Hopewell Township of a century ago, when farm lanes were bordered by snake fences and osage orange trees, and when farmers still worked by hand and horsepower to cultivate their fields of corn, oats, wheat and hay. Operations vary daily, so there is no telling what you might see: a reaper-binder or haytedder in action, a flock of sheep coming in from the meadow, or a farm crew bringing in the sheaves.

TADA! has been producing one-act musicals and plays since 1984. Each of our original musicals was commissioned for its premiere performance at TADA!, and plays are the winning selections from our annual contest. Our scripts offer flexible casting, age-appropriate themes, piano accompaniment on CD, and are enjoyed by kids and adults across the country. We hope you will bring one of our original works into your community and share the fun!

Why Choose a TADA! Show?

Bring TADA! Camps to Your Organization

Bring TADA!’s popular Camps to your school, camp, day care, community center or business! With programs across the metro area, TADA! delivers great musical theater programs for kids in your community. Families and friends love applauding their kids’ mini-musicals as much as the children love creating and performing them.

Similar to TADA!s on-site Week-long Camps, students rehearse and perform songs, choreography and scenes based on original TADA! shows and selections from Broadway over a five-day period (longer camps are also available). On the last day of the program, kids present their own mini-musical in a final performance for family and friends.

Personal and creative growth takes place in a structured and supportive environment. Ensemble methods are taught to encourage cooperation and positive, creative expression as kids develop their theatrical skills. Each camp has a unique theme and different musical numbers–depending on your program goals.

TADA! provides:

  • Two to three professional teaching artist/directors (Music Director, Choreographer & Director) with extensive experience in music, theater, dance and education
  • Songs, music, scripts and materials from one of TADA!’s original musicals
  • Our award-winning team-teaching and youth-centered approach
  • Our unique program format and structure including: skills building, rehearsal and performance

Bring TADA! Classes to Your Organization

After the school day, students learn the necessity of teamwork as they put together an ensemble performance piece involving dance steps, songs and scenes. These classes help to improve the group dynamic by addressing varying learning and behavioral styles. In addition, these programs help children develop theater skills.

Classes include:

  • Musical Theater Skills Building: Students learn the music, dance and theater skills needed to become competent musical theater actors. Music is drawn from TADA!’s repertoire of over 30 original musicals which were written expressly for performance by children. Program includes: two Teaching Artists (music director and director/choreographer). Up to 20 students per class. 2-hour and 1.5-hour sessions available.
  • Musical Theater Play Building: For schools interested in a more in-depth residency program, TADA! offers a two-part creation and production workshop. Students create an original mini-musical or play, rehearse the scenes and songs, and perform it for the school community. This format may use thematic material as suggested by the school. Past scripts have centered on topics as varied as immigration, teamwork, and tolerance. Students work on their writing and performance skills, and the use of musical numbers to promote fun, active learning. Program includes: two Teaching Artists (music director & director/choreographer). Up to 20 students per class. 2-hour and 1.5-hour sessions available.
  • Drama Workshops: These workshops focus on the skills of the non-musical theater actor. Acting games, improvisation and scene development are used to prepare a presentation for family and schoolmates. Students explore ensemble work, develop theater skills and create characters as they work with topics as varied as world cultures, comedy, immigration and conflict resolution. Program includes: one Teaching Artist (Director). Up to 20 students per class. 2-hour and 1.5-hour sessions available.

Workshops are also available.

Power of Words

The Power of Words exhibit features a film that demonstrates how modern-day figures like Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt used their words to instill hope while others like Hitler, Stalin and Osama Bin Laden and other extremists used the same power to spread lies and incite hatred.

Hall of Memory

The Hall of Memory includes a Holocaust documentary produced by the Simon Wiesenthal Center and a thought provoking film, In Our Time, which presents examples of genocide in the 20th and 21st centuries, such as Darfur and Cambodia, and reflects upon the lessons of history for today.

GlobalHate.com

Based on ongoing Simon Wiesenthal Center research and investigation of hate on the internet, Globalhate.com is equipped with touch screen computer terminals that unmask the dangerous proliferation of hate on the internet and introduce questions for critical thinking in a media saturated society.

Millenium Machine

The Millennium Machine offers a media presentation that focuses on pressing human rights issues such as the plight of refugees and political prisoners, the exploitation of women and children, and the threats of domestic and international terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Participants in this immersive theatre experience will test their knowledge of the subject matter via automated response technology and are challenged to discuss solutions to these complex, global problems.

Point of View Diner

The Point of View Diner is a modern cyber-café that screens a variety of scenarios portraying situations of escalating conflict in a contemporary American context. Through the use of cutting edge technology, group members have the opportunity to individually ‘interview’ the main characters in each video scenario and then register their personal opinions on the issues raised. The results of the anonymous vote are instantly tabulated, providing a springboard for dialogue on violence prevention, conflict resolution and personal responsibility. Video scenarios included the Freedom of Speech, Teen Bullying, and Domestic Violence.
